Do I Need a Website for My Business? (Yes, and Here's Why)

We hear this question a lot, especially from businesses that have been running fine without a website or that rely on social media. So let us be direct: yes, you need a website. And the data backs it up.

81% of consumers research a business online before making a purchase or visiting in person. 75% of people judge a company's credibility based on its website design. And 56% of consumers say they do not trust a business without a website at all. Those are not opinions. Those are numbers from multiple consumer behavior studies published in the last two years.

What Happens When You Do Not Have a Website

When a potential customer hears about your business and Googles your name, one of three things happens. They find your website and learn about what you offer. They find nothing and move on to a competitor. Or they find a competitor's website instead and give that business their money.

Without a website, you are invisible to the majority of potential customers who search for your type of business online. You cannot show up in Google search results. You cannot appear in Google Maps results (your Google Business Profile is more effective when it links to a website). And you have no control over what people find when they search for your business name. It might be an outdated Yelp listing, a random Facebook post, or nothing at all.

Think about your own behavior. When a friend recommends a restaurant, do you just show up? Or do you Google it first, check the menu, look at photos, and read a few reviews? Your customers do the same thing with your business.

But I Have Social Media. Is That Not Enough?

No. Social media is great for building relationships and staying visible to existing customers. But it is not a substitute for a website, and here is why.

You do not own your social media presence. Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok can change their algorithms tomorrow and cut your visibility by 90%. It has happened before. Organic reach on Facebook is down to about 5% of your followers. That means if you have 1,000 followers, only 50 people see your posts unless you pay to boost them.

Social media profiles are limited in what they can communicate. You cannot provide detailed service descriptions, pricing pages, in-depth case studies, or comprehensive FAQs. You cannot control the layout and user experience. And you cannot capture leads the same way you can with a website's contact forms and calls to action.

Social media also does not show up well in Google search results for commercial keywords. When someone searches "landscaping company in Boca Raton," they are going to see websites, not Instagram profiles. If you are not in those results, your competitor is.

Use social media alongside your website. Not instead of it.

Your Website Is Your 24/7 Salesperson

A website works for you around the clock. At 2 AM when someone in your area has a pipe burst and searches for an emergency plumber, your website can show up, explain your services, and give them a number to call. At 11 PM when a business owner is researching accounting firms for next year, your website can present your credentials and capture their contact information.

Your website answers questions before people even ask them. What do you do? Where are you located? How much do you charge? What do past customers say about you? Can I see examples of your work? Every one of those questions is a barrier between a potential customer and a sale. Your website removes those barriers.

What a Basic Website Costs (Less Than You Think)

A lot of business owners avoid getting a website because they assume it costs $10,000 or more. It can, but it does not have to.

A basic, professional 5-page website with a homepage, about page, services page, contact page, and one additional page costs $1,500 to $3,000 from a competent designer. DIY builders like Squarespace let you build a decent site yourself for $16 to $49 per month if you have the time and some design sense.

Compare that to the revenue you are leaving on the table without one. If even one new customer per month finds you through your website and that customer is worth $200, your website pays for itself in under a year at the low end. Most businesses see a much faster return than that.

Even "Simple" Businesses Benefit

We hear business owners say "I am just a small plumber" or "I only do local lawn care, I do not need a website." But those are exactly the businesses that benefit most. Local service businesses compete in a digital space whether they realize it or not. When someone needs a plumber, they Google it. When they need lawn care, they Google it. If you are not there, you do not exist in that moment.

A simple website with your services, your service area, your phone number, and a few photos of your work gives you a massive advantage over competitors who only have a Facebook page or nothing at all. Add a Google Business Profile linked to your website and a few customer reviews, and you can dominate local search results in your area.

Getting Started

If you have been putting this off, today is the day to stop. You do not need a perfect website. You need a live website. Start simple. Get 5 pages up that clearly explain what you do, where you do it, and how to contact you. Add real photos of your work or your team. Include your phone number on every page. Make sure it works on mobile.

Then set up a free Google Business Profile and link it to your website. Ask your best customers to leave Google reviews. That combination alone puts you ahead of a surprising number of local businesses.
